1964 GMC 1000 Sucking Hot Air.

In this post we are building a cold air intake out of a 1960's heater box and the tubing is built out of abs pipe. This idea came about after I drove the truck with the hood off while I was doing body work on it. The truck really seemed to love that cold air it could breath and was running much better.

Also check out my 1960 K1000 4x4 Project.

Please enjoy the videos there a slide show of the build blog post.

I started pondering on what I could use to build an intake on the free and I just happen to look over to the 2 extra heater boxes that came with my 4x4 when I bought it.

Would you look at that it looks like its made for the truck;)

Had to remount my headlight relays and horn also had to extend the wire a little.

Learn more about relays at Lighting The Night on my 1960 GMC 4x4 build blog.

Plugging up all the holes the easy way I couldn't bring myself to weld these up most of them are not visible or hardly visible and it would crate some real metal work where its not needed.

I could not believe when I started grinding this cover down and no sparks started flying it is solid aluminium I had no idea they made anything out of aluminium 53 years ago on a vehicle.

Gotta love this stuff... cutting up your hands!

It sure looks cool though.

When finished the aluminium will be polished and clear coated along with the grilling and the box will be flat black.
Abs is an amazing material when heated it turns to putty letting you mold or shape it how ever you please and within 30-40 seconds it cools back to a hard yet flexible material.
A section of pipe and a 4 inch to 3 inch reducer was used to make the carb hat.

After a few hours of cutting, trimming and a few layers of glue its really starting to look good.

Abs glue has a chemical reaction with the pipe and melts the pieces together as it drys it will smooth it self out, you can see the low spots in the pictures but the next day it will be a smooth solid piece of plastic.

All set up ready for glue.

Found that the wire wheel on the grinder works best for removing unwanted plastic to get a smoother nicer look out of the fittings.

All caked up with glue.

Not bad for abs aye?

I've said before how I love making gaskets, this is how my old man showed me to make them.
Just start taping the gasket aiming for the metal edge under neath it will start to show its self and once you cut through in a spot you can continue to hit and cut the gasket all the way around.

Prettied them up with a little work from a file.

Used a dense piece of foam to seal up the bottom of the intake box.

Used liquid nails and a adhesive caulk to glue and seal up everything inside.

Went and found just a basic square air filter fits perfect with a little trimming.

Sealed up the bottom real good with some more adhesive caulk.

Hillbilly gasket I let this dry over night.

Well she is finely all mocked up and sucking fresh cold air now all that's left is polishing and paint!

Still in progress.
